Institutions face a variety of resource challenges in today’s economic climate. As a result, many universities are examining how they structure their budgets and have implemented a responsibility center management (RCM) model. In NACUBO’s upcoming webcast, Responsibility Center Management: Two Different Perspectives, Peter Fackler, interim vice president, Misericordia University, Dallas, Penn.; and Amir Rahnamay-Azar, vice president for finance and chief financial officer, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, will discuss their respective experiences with implementing RCM, and the key factors that need to be considered in undertaking a successful transition.
Participants will learn how financial and budget systems need to be tailored to support responsibility-center reporting in advance of the RCM implementation. Attendees will also learn the importance of accounting and budgeting staff working in conjunction with academic and administrative leadership to ensure a successful outcome. This webcast will help institutions determine whether the RCM model is suitable for their campus.

- Program Costing: Increasing Net Revenue Through Efficiency. Presenters shared how the University of Minnesota’s School of Nursing combined program costing with a computer modeling platform to assist with workload management.
- NACUBO Live! Results of the 2015 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments. This webcast, which was streamed live from the 2016 Endowment and Debt Management Forum, provided an overview of the results from the annual survey. Presenters also reviewed strategies that institutions used to confront volatile market conditions during the year.
- Legislative Lunchcast—A 30-Minute Washington Update. NACUBO provided resources to help business officers understand the political climate and explore potential budgetary, tax, and regulatory changes.

The 2016 Higher Education Accounting Forum will be held April 10–12 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in Orlando. Designed for advanced-level accounting and finance professionals, HEAF will feature plenary, concurrent breakout, and roundtable formats. This forum serves as both an annual update and future outlook. This year’s program offers three general sessions with a presidential perspective, each offering a unique aspect on the present and future state of higher education.
- Next-level leadership. Since 2009, Wendy Libby has served as president of Stetson University, Deland, Fla. Before taking the helm at Stetson, Libby spent five years at Stephen’s College, Columbia, Mo.—the second oldest women’s college—where she transformed the institution into a financial and academic success story. Stetson called on Libby to take the university to its next level of growth. Like so many colleges with a rich history, Stetson wanted to remain true to its traditions, draw students from across the country, and continue to evolve.
During her session, Libby will address Stetson’s strategic vision, and the tactics that enabled the forward-looking strengthening of the university; a story that parallels the necessities of many colleges nationally.
- The state of the industry. Kent Chabotar is a professor of political science; former chief business officer; and, until 2014, was president of Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C. During his tenure at Guilford, Chabotar guided the college toward strategic objectives: financial stability, increased enrollment, and enhanced facilities and campus life. Chabotar, who has authored and co-authored books, journal articles, and monographs, will entertain the audience with a talk on the current state of higher education. Chabotar will draw from personal experience as well as economic, political, and financial inputs to paint a picture of the industry’s current strengths, challenges, and future outlook.
- Attributes of effective leaders. For close to two decades, Washburn University President Jerry Farley has led a team that has redefined the institution and realigned it to its original mission. Farley, a former chief business officer and controller, is now a frequent speaker at higher education accounting and leadership workshops. Farley will join a panel of industry experts to discuss the desired attributes of controllers, assistant vice presidents, and vice presidents of finance and administration of today and tomorrow.
As current leadership faces retirement, the next generation must be carefully cultivated and recruited to sustain and advance the higher education industry. Farley, who understands the type of technical accounting and financial talent that higher education needs, will share with attendees critical financial leadership attributes.
